Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2019 winners announced

The winners of the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2019 were announced today at the Plastics Recycling Show Europe, held at the RAI Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The seven award winners were:

Automotive, Electrical or Electronic Product: Volvo Recycled Plastics Demo Car, Volvo Cars

Building & Construction Product: MPO Easy Channel, Multiport GmbH

Household & Leisure Product: PBD Collection Bag, Cedo Folien- und Haushaltsprodukte GmbH

Plastic Packaging Product: Garçon Wines sustainable 100% rPET, flat wine bottle

Plastics Recycling Ambassador: Gian De Belder, Procter & Gamble

Product Technology Innovation: REC-NIR-BLACK, NIR-transparent black masterbatch, Ampacet

Recycling Machinery Innovation: Cascade Extrusion System Corema, extrusion line for recycling of plastic waste, by Interseroh and Erema.

The winners each received a trophy, which was designed and made by the Better Future Factory. The base is 3D printed and made from 100% recycled ABS plastic car dashboards and the multi-colour top is laser cut from compressed HDPE beach clean-up bottle caps.

The jury recognised the demo car by Volvo Cars for incorporating 25% recycled plastic content in the XC60 model, in which a total of 170 of components were replaced by recycled plastic components.

The MPO Easy Channel drainage system by Multiport GmbH is made from HDPE- and PP packaging waste, offering a lightweight, easy to handle and easily-laid solution.

The PBD drawstring collection bag by Cedo Folien- und Haushaltsprodukte GmbH contains more than 90% certified post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic of which more than 40% is flexible packaging.

The sustainable, 100% rPET, flat wine bottle by Garçon Wines and RPC M&H Plastics is an innovative mail order wine bottle that fits through letter boxes. The convenient and cost-effective packaging has a lightweight sustainable design.

“We are using wine to encourage people to do better,” said Santiago Navarro, CEO and co-founder Garçon Wines upon receiving the awards.

Recycling ambassador winner Gian De Belder was described by the jury as “the face of Procter & Gamble’s commitment to sustainable development.”

“He has worked tirelessly to develop solutions to problems such as the recyclability of Opaque and Difficult to Recycle (ODR) household and personal care PET bottles,” the jury said.

Accepting the award, De Belder said it recognised the team spirit within his company and the "long-lasting relationship" with the industry.

REC-NIR-BLACK, NIR-transparent black masterbatch by Ampacet addresses carbon black packaging waste such as trays and clamshells. Black plastic waste generally causes problems in recycling streams, as it cannot be detected by the NIR sensors used by most recyclers. The black masterbatches developed by Ampacet Corp contain no carbon black pigment, rendering them near-infrared (NIR) transparent, and therefore detectable and able to be sorted.

The Corema Cascade Extrusion System was recognised by the judges as “the most innovative combination of processing technologies that delivers cost-effective recycling of post-consumer plastic to produce high quality plastic material.”

Open to organisations and individuals across Europe who are involved in the recycling of plastic materials, the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe are organised jointly by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) and Crain Communications, organisers of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe. www.prseventeurope.com
