Using data from a series of sources, global beauty brand The Body Shop has compiled a list of the top 20 cities and towns in the UK which are recycling the most plastic.
The plastic recycling index was compiled by analysing the amount of plastic sent for recycling between April 2017 and March 2018, which was then cross-referenced by population.
Based on the results, Wigan was identified as the top plastic recycling town in the UK, with 9,000 tonnes of plastic sent for recycling over the data period.
Wales featured highly in the results, with Bridgend, Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil taking second through fourth place, with approx. 3,200, 4,900 and 1,100 tonnes or recycled plastic.
In fifth, Derry was the highest-placed city in Northern Ireland (2,833 tonnes).
Scotland had two cities in the top 20, with Sterling in seventh and Falkirk in 19thspot (3,500 tonnes combined recycled total).
For its part, The Body Shop will use just three types of plastic for product packaging by 2030, making it easier for consumers to effectively recycle used items. With the company’s Return Recycle Repeat scheme, 25% more waste packaging will be collected than is sold.
