Venator, a UK-based manufacturer of pigments and additives, announced it has implemented an automated tool to calculate the carbon footprint of its products.
The Eviden Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Platform, developed with technology company Atos through its Eviden business group, is designed to provide more precise and transparent emissions data for Venator’s extensive product portfolio.
The company’s pigments and additives play a role in the plastics industry by enhancing colour, durability, and performance. Venator’s titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment provides whiteness, opacity, and UV protection, while colour pigments and optical brighteners improve aesthetics. Functional additives such as UV stabilisers, heat stabilisers, antioxidants, and flame retardants enhance longevity and safety.
The platform was developed in collaboration with BASF and focusses on cradle-to-gate carbon footprint calculations.
The project, which started in October 2023 and concluded in December 2024, enables Venator to automate its carbon footprint calculations and share detailed emissions data with its customers. The tool uses Life Cycle Assessment methodology and adheres to international standards, including ISO14067:2018, which builds upon ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006.
By providing detailed carbon footprint data, Venator aims to enhance transparency and support its customers in making informed environmental decisions.
“This advanced tool empowers us to assess our portfolio and production network in terms of CO2 emissions and take actionable steps to reduce our PCF,” said Rob Portsmouth, executive vice president EHS, sustainability and HR at Venator. “The tool's automation capabilities provide us with clear, transparent, and comparable PCF data, offering valuable insights into internal and external supply chain dependencies.”
“It allows us to get a clear view of the carbon footprint of our products, as well as being able to share these with our customers, ultimately helping them achieve their own ESG goals. This platform not only enhances our ability to measure and manage the carbon footprint of our products but also supports our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. By providing our customers with detailed carbon footprint data, we empower them to make more informed choices and contribute to a more sustainable future,” he concluded.
