A new collaboration agreement between three companies - Repsol, Jokey Group and Cantero de Letur - will see the first use of recycled plastic packing in the organic dairy industry in Spain.
Packaging manufacturer Jokey Group, of Germany, will produce the packaging for the cheese products made by its customer, the Spanish Cantero de Letur Group, from Repsol’s ISCC Plus certified circular Reciclex polypropylene.
“This new alliance announced today allows us to continue advancing in our ambition to recycle the equivalent of 20 percent of our polyolefins production,” said Fernando Arroyo, Polypropylene Director at Repsol.
Repsol’s Reciclex polypropylene is made from raw materials derived from feedstock - pyrolysis oil - based on chemically recycled plastic waste. The materials produced from this feedstock offer the same quality and properties and virgin materials - which means they are suitable even for food-contact applications.
Investing in this technology will enable Cantero de Letur to respond to customer demand for more sustainable products and packaging noted CEO Pablo Cuervo-Arango.
Repsol certified all its petrochemical complexes to produce under the ISCC Plus accreditation in 2020. Jokey Group earned ISCC Plus certification in August 2020 at four production sites, three in Germany and one in Spain. The certificate attests to the use and traceability of recycled materials on a mass balance basis.
“The Repsol-Jokey-Cantero project is one of the first to pilot the purpose of demonstrating the long-term applicability of recycled plastics,” said Michael Schmidt, Chief Procurement Officer for Jokey. “Real, working business and material flow models will attract more partners and drive segments and the plastics industry toward a circular economy.”
