TotalEnergies and Ecolab have collaborated on the development and launch of primary plastic packaging with recycled content that is suitable for heavy-use packaging markets. The new product, designed for packaging highly concentrated cleaning products, is based on a grade from TotalEnergies’ RE:clic portfolio. TotalEnergies launched its new new range of low-carbon recycled polymers in October 2022, as a means to offer customers an option to reduce the carbon footprint of end-use applications by improving their energy efficiency.
The RE:clic portfolio is based on polymers from recycled material or bio-feedstock and currently consists of three different brands. The RE:use grades contain mechanically recycled plastic originating from post-consumer and post-consumer plastic waste; the ISCC-certified RE:build mass-balanced polymers are produced via a chemical recycling process and are targeted at high-end and contact-sensitive applications; while the third range consists of the RE:newable polymers, derived from bio-based products. Like the RE:build range, they are certified under ISCC Plus.
The present launch is a packaging solution based on TotalEnergies’ RE:use rPE6314 grade – within the RE:clic portfolio of circular polymers - in the MAXX S range for Facility care. Featuring a combination of PCR with high-performing booster resin, its natural colour and excellent chemical resistance, consistency and low odour make it among the best-performing, ready-to-use rHDPE grades for blow moulding applications.
"This collaboration with Ecolab is an excellent example of a value chain partnership aimed at enabling circularity for highly technical applications and it fully contributes to our ambition of producing 30% circular polymers by 2030," said Olivier Greiner, Vice President Polymers Europe & Orient, at TotalEnergies.
The development aligns with Ecolab’s aim to offer its customers products designed to optimise the amount of plastic and minimise environmental impact, said Anja de Reus, VP Sustainability Europe at Ecolab. “This is part of our commitment to provide every customer with an overall positive impact and deliver value.”
The European Union is developing the Sustainable Products Initiative to incorporate sustainability throughout the whole lifecycle of the product, and to boost circularity. This initiative will help take another important step into the direction of reaching the Green Deal objectives to make Europe a more resource-efficient, climate neutral, and pollution-free circular economy.
