With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) 2030 target of 70% recyclability for all packaging rapidly approaching, recyclers and brand owners are under increasing pressure to comply with stricter regulations. The legislation mandates significant recycled content requirements, driving innovation in packaging design and recycling processes.
At this year’s PRSE, Tomra Recycling will showcase its technologies designed to help businesses meet these evolving demands, including AI-driven sorting, high-precision flake sorting, and comprehensive waste analysis.
Tomra experts will be on-site to demonstrate the crucial role of advanced sorting in achieving PPWR’s recycled content targets while ensuring compliance with new food-grade safety standards, such as limitations on Bisphenol A (BPA). Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Tomra Insight, the company’s cloud-based monitoring system that optimises sorting performance through real-time material stream analysis and customisable reporting. Additionally, PolyPerception’s waste analyser will showcase how AI-powered cameras provide real-time material classification, enabling data-driven decision-making and greater efficiency in sorting plants.
Sorting technologies on display
AUTOSORT with GAINnext: Utilising deep learning-powered object recognition, GAINnext enhances automation in sorting tasks, surpassing traditional optical methods. It delivers higher material purity, reduces manual sorting, and optimises performance in food-grade applications and PET stream purification. With the ability to differentiate between food-grade and non-food-grade materials, GAINnext simplifies achieving 95% purity when combined with TOMRA’s state-of-the-art near-infrared (NIR) sensors.
INNOSORT FLAKE: This flake sorting solution classifies by polymer, colour, and transparency. The new UV sensor enhances PET sorting by removing contaminants and discoloured flakes, while also detecting various polymer types such as PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, and PA. This makes it a cost-effective solution for processing highly contaminated mixed flake inputs.
AUTOSORT FLAKE: Designed for high-performance sorting in advanced applications, particularly where bottle-to-bottle recycling quality is required.
“The PPWR necessitates a strategic shift for the industry,” said Fabrizio Radice, SVP & head of global sales and marketing at Tomra Recycling. “With brand owners sourcing materials to meet recycling targets, European recyclers must maintain high quality while reducing costs to stay competitive. Tomra not only provides the right solutions but also the expertise to navigate these regulatory challenges. Our technologies ensure consistent sorting performance, stable output purity, and lower operational costs, supporting the industry’s journey toward full material circularity. Moreover, our advanced flake purification technologies will be critical in addressing the growing challenge of BPA removal.”
Conference participation
Tomra’s participation extends beyond the exhibition floor. On April 1, Bilyana Ignatova, Head of EU Public Affairs at TOMRA, will join a discussion at the PRSE Conference from 11:45 AM to 12:30 PM in Conference Theatre Two. The session will explore the critical implications of the PPWR and the future of sustainable packaging solutions.
Tomra’s AI-related sorting innovations will also be displayed at the AI Innovation Hub, curated by the editorial team at Sustainable Plastics.
