Tipa, an Israeli-headquartered manufacturer of compostable packaging solutions for food and fashion, has joined forces with Charter Next Generation (CNG), a U.S. specialty film manufacturer, to drive local U.S. production and adoption of compostable packaging. The announcement follows another two similar partnerships with PPC Flexible Packaging and Clearview Packaging.

Under the new partnership, CNG will manufacture TIPA’s newly launched Tipaclear 301 as well as the Tipaclear 319. Both are transparent compostable films for food and consumer goods packaging, available in various thicknesses and applications and exclusive to the North American market. The Tipaclear 319 is both home and industrially compostable and is designed to biodegrade just like organic waste in home compost. It is sealable and printable on both sides, making it ideal for use in packaging for a wide range of products including fresh fruit, bread, spices, cookies, nuts, cereals, toiletries, toys and apparel.

The films run on most conventional plastic packaging machinery and offer a fully compostable alternative to conventional plastic while bearing the same functionalities, like transparency, and functionality, according to the manufacturer. They are made from a patent-protected blend of fully compostable polymers.

“We are thrilled to count CNG as our partner, expanding the commercial availability of compostable packaging options in North America,” said Michael Hanratty, acting gm & strategic business development, North America, at TIPA. “This is a significant step to help businesses actively contribute to curbing the reliance on conventional flexible plastics and navigate quickly-changing policies on packaging waste management for the benefit of the planet.”

Tipa was founded in 2010 with the development of a proprietary technology for compostable packaging, inspired by the natural biodegradation process of organic waste. In September 2019, the company raised $25m (€22.7m) in financing.
