Thomas Gangl has been appointed CEO of Austria-based Borealis, effective 1 April. He succeeds Alfred Stern, who will become OMV Executive Board member for Chemicals & Materials on that same date.
Gangl (49) is currently Executive Board member of OMV AG. Collaboration between Borealis and OMV has grown closer following OMV’s acquisition of a majority stake in Borealis on 29 October 2020.
“By appointing Thomas Gangl we have succeeded in gaining an exceptional manager and expert from among our own ranks to take the helm of Borealis,” noted Rainer Seele, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Borealis AG and CEO of OMV.
Both Stern and Gangle have been key players in the evolution of their companies’ circular thinking.
Over the past years, Stern (56) has led Borealis’ transformation from a virgin polyolefins producer to a leading provider of advanced and circular polyolefin solutions. He has also successfully established Borealis as a European market leader in the mechanical recycling of plastics.
At OMV, by contrast, the focus has been on chemical recycling. Gangl was responsible for establishing these activities, which perfectly complement those of Borealis and thereby laid 'the foundation for our future circular economy', said Seele.
