Sulzer has partnered with Fuenix Ecogy, a Netherlands-based chemical recycling company, becoming the exclusive licensor of the proprietary technology developed by Fuenix Ecogy. The agreement signed by the companies gives Sulzer a strategic stake in the recycling company and will further extend the company’s capabilities in the chemical recycling area.
“With the acquisition of a stake in Fuenix Ecogy we are enhancing our scope and portfolio in creating fully circular, zero-waste plastic value chains,” said Suzanne Thoma, Executive Chair at Sulzer.
Sulzer has developed and currently licences proprietary reaction and separation technologies; the present agreement will enable the company to offer complete recycling lines based on Fuenix’s Ecogy technology and its own proven separation and purification solutions. The company will also continue to offer its separation and purification know-how and solutions to other plastic recycling technologies.
Fuenix Ecogy has developed pyrolysis technology to process end-of-life contaminated mixed plastic waste that is unable to be recycled by mechanical means. The technology converts this into usable raw materials - high value hydrocarbons - for the petrochemical industry, as well as paraffin. The solution offers high recovery and conversion rates: Fuenix claims that betwen fifty and eighty percent of the input is transformed into renewable feedstock, yielding a CO2 emissions reduction of around 65% compared to traditional production methods.
The new partnership with Sulzer will enable Fuenix Ecogy to scale its technology and promote its global adoption, said Sirt Mellema, CEO at Fuenix - ‘so that we can help create a circular economy for plastic waste’.
