German flexible packaging specialist Südpack Verpackungen GmbH is introducing a number of sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions during the FachPack packaging trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany in September.
The Ochsenhausen-based film expert will offer solutions that follow a three-pronged strategy: reduce – recycle – replace, during the show, Südpack said in a release ahead of the event.
“In the current debate over plastics, food packaging is especially in the crosshairs,” said Johannes Remmele, managing director at Südpack.
“How to protect the environment, climate and valuable resources is an important question for the future of humanity – and we as an industry have to help find answers,” he added.
The company will be highlighting its “substantial advances” particularly with regards to reduction of material consumption during the FachPack event.
Helped by its “downgauging” technologies, the company said it is using “far less granulate” to produce the same amount of film than only a few years ago.
Established products from Südpack’s ‘Veraplex World’, for example, are being produced using up to 29% less material, said the company without offering a comparison baseline.
The xPET solution from the Multipeel product family offers similar efficiency. The resealable solution, used for food packaging such as cold cuts, cheeses, and bread spreads, are using up to 10% materials.
As part of its sustainability programme, Südpack is also increasing the recyclability of its products.
The company has developed new xPEP packaging film concepts based on polyolefins, with increased recyclability.
Safe Peel Clear xPEP, which will be on display at FachPack, delivers the same sealing performance as its sister products, but when used in combination with PP packaging, it’s up to 96% recyclable, said the Südpack release.
The solutions are also available for the company’s Multifol, flow wrap and Multipeel products.
The Multipeel xPEP concepts, according to Südpack, offer 90% recyclability rating on the Ecoterm scale.
To reduce dependence on petroleum-based products and curb CO2 emission, Südpack is also investing in further renewable resources.
The company will exhibit its Planova products, made from cornstarch-based PLA, and xpect product line using bio-based polyethylene (PE), derived from sugarcane.
Südpack said it was growing its bio-based portfolio, with xpect products now available as MAP packs, top and bottom films, and as flow packs.
The solutions, said the company, provide the same functionality as those made of conventional PE.
Another innovative display will be Südpack’s new film packaging solutions with paper component.
The products Veraplex Craft, Ecocraft Skin and Ecocraft Shape form the new Craft Line, combine a thin layer of plastic with paper, to offer an “undiminished performance”.
The “particularly flexible” bottom film Ecocraft Shape is made of 80% paper and a thin layer of PE, Südpack explained.
