Solvay announced that it obtained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification for its polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) manufacturing facilities in Borger, Texas, and Beveren, Belgium.
The certification allows the Belgium-based chemical company to track the amount and sustainability characteristics of circular or bio-based content in its value chain. This content is then attributed it via the mass balance approach based on verifiable bookkeeping.
Solvay said the products offer the same technical qualities as its virgin PPS counterparts, in addition to being an attractive solution for clients seeking a transition to sustainable materials. “Our mass balanced PPS grades meet with customers’ increasing efforts to reduce their scope 3 emissions and carbon footprint without compromising processability or end-use performance,” said Ysée Génot, E-mobility and sustainability marketing manager at Solvay.
The mass balance PPS polymers produced at the Beveren facility in Belgium belong to Solvay’s Ryton portfolio. The compounds are widely used in automotive, electrical, electronics, and appliances applications, where they meet especially high thermal and mechanical performance requirements. The material can replace metal and thermosets whilst also reducing fuel consumption and overall costs. Solvay is launching two new grades of Ryton PPS resins at Fakuma 2023.
