Two European suppliers with expertise in sealing technology have contributed to the development and supply of a new COVID-19 diagnostic test that received FDA approval this week in the US.
Selig, a specialist in sealing solutions, and Relco UK, a manufacturer of induction sealing machines and components, were involved in the design of the receiving container for the test samples.
The new test consists of an isothermal system can detect COVID-19 in less than five minutes, thus enabling effective clinical decisions to be made quickly. The unit, originally used to test for influenza and Strep A in clinics across the US, was featured in an interview with the US president that was aired across several news channels. This instrument is now suitable for COVID-19 test samples.
These test samples are contained in special receivers designed by Relco for molecular analysis. These test receivers are hermetically sealed to preserve their sterility using Selig’s easy to open Lift 'n' Peel sealing solution. Engineered to create a hermetic, leak-proof seal, the easy to grip tab gives the clinician a large surface to remove the seal without any additional tools, while also keeping their fingers free from contacting the side of the liner or the sterile interior of the test sample.
“We have worked with Relco on providing test samples for this diagnostic testing unit since its launch, however, with the new COVID-19 5-minute test achieving FDA approval this week, we, along with Relco, are proud to offer our services to ensure that production is increased to meet demand for this critical test,” said Selig president and CEO Stephen P Cassidy.
Thanks to FDA approval, it is expected that 50,000 test samples will initially be supplied per day, with the aim of this being increased to over a million a month as needed.
