SC Johnson has announced that all its Mr Muscle trigger bottles in the U.K. will henceforth be made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. In addition, the bottles all feature a perforated, easily removable sleeve to enhance recyclability. Customers can dispose separately of the bottle and the printed sleeve, avoiding contamination of the waste recycling streams at municipal systems.
The new bottles are just one example of SC Johnson’s efforts to accelerate its progress to tackle the plastic pollution crisis by increasing the use of PCR and removing excess packaging from products. Others include:
A goal to triple the amount of post-consumer recycled plastic content in packaging across its product lines by 2025. Today 14% of SC Johnson’s plastic packaging is PCR, up from 6% in 2019.
The launch of a new line of Mr Muscle Platinum Window & Glass cleaner in the UK last year featuring 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles. The plastic for the bottles is sourced from its global partnership with Plastic Bank, which helps prevent plastic waste from entering the oceans while improving the lives of those who help collect it. The partnership includes the opening of 509 collection points across several countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam – four of the five countries that contribute most to ocean plastic – and Brazil.
A goal to make 100% of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Currently, more than 62% of SC Johnson products are designed for this, and the company is expanding concentrated refill options and refill trials with Ecover through Waitrose and Sainsbury supermarkets.
SC Johnson also works closely with several partner organisations to support circular plastic economy models and keep plastic out of landfills and the wider environment. The company is a signatory of The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme to establish a common vision for companies to help create a circular economy for plastics.
