S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. is polishing its sustainability credentials with a new bottle made from recycled ocean-bound plastic for its European and Latin American Mr. Muscle brand.
The consumer brand giant based in Racine, Wis., announced the project June 30 as part of an initiative to help combat ocean plastic pollution.
The new line of Mr. Muscle Platinum Window and Glass cleaner will have bottles made from 100 recycled ocean-bound plastic and will be available in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Mr. Muscle joins S.C. Johnson's Windex brand in featuring 100 percent recycled ocean-bound plastic in its trigger bottles.
The new product is part of S.C. Johnson's partnership with Plastic Bank, which is aimed at reducing the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean. The initiative also aims to alleviate poverty through the opening of 509 collection points throughout Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Brazil.
Plastic Bank plans to collect 15,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean, according to the release.
Collectors then sell the plastic for a premium, which helps them afford household necessities.
The new Mr. Muscle line made of ocean-bound plastic bottles are already available through Wilko and Amazon. and will roll out to more stores in the coming months.
The move is in alignment with S.C. Johnson's commitment to an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
