Samsung Electronics has shared its new business vision and, unsurprisingly, it’s all about artificial intelligence – or ‘AI for All’, as they put it during a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a tech event, which took place in Los Angeles between Jan. 9 and Jan. 12.
Sustainability was next in line in Samsung’s renewed business strategy. When it comes to material choice, the company emphasised the important of recycled plastics.
“We start by incorporating recycled materials into some of our most loved products, such as recycled fishing nets in our Galaxy,” said Inhee Chung, VP of corporate sustainability at Samsung during a press conference. “Recycled plastic accounted for 14% of the total plastic used in our products in 2022. And we’re working towards increasing this amount,” she assured.
Samsung’s environmental strategy involves sustainability milestones the company aims to hit in the next two decades, including using recycled resin in 50% of plastic parts by 2030 and in all plastic components by 2050.
The sustainability zone at Samsung’s booth showcased how the company is promoting resource circularity, featuring walls built with recycled ABS and recycled PP developed by Samsung’s Circular Economy Lab. r-ABS is made using recycled Styrofoam that comes from inside Samsung product packaging, whilst r-PP is made by recycling various by-products generated during the production of household goods.
Other tech giants joined Samsung in announcing or emphasising recycled plastics strategies. LG Electronics, for example, announced it is expanding the use of recycled plastics in 19 product categories. It has set a target to use a cumulative 600,000 tons of recycled plastics in products from 2021-2030. Through its subsidiary LG Chem, the company produces ABS and polycarbonate products with recycled content, and plans to expand its PCR product range to include PO and PVC. LG Chem has also made investments in chemical recycling.
