EconCore, a pioneer in continuous honeycomb sandwich material production has now earned the Solar Impulse Label for their rPET honeycomb core technology, the company has announced. The technology received the recognition following an assessment performed by external independent experts and based on verified standards for economic profitability and ecologic sustainability.
EconCore has developed a continuous manufacturing process that can produce thermoformable, high-performance lightweight panels with a thermoplastic core made from recycled PET in a cost-effective way. RPET honeycomb cores are made from 95% recycled PET, mainly sourced from post-consumer waste including (food) packaging, PET bottles, textiles and post-industrial waste.
The company’s technology makes lightweight, functional applications possible in a range of industries including the automotive branch, transportation, building and construction, industrial packaging/graphical displays, furniture and many others.
The Solar Impulse foundation is a non-profit environmental foundation founded in 2003 to address environmental challenges without compromising economic growth. Launched in 2018, the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label certifies that a product, service or process contributes to a circular economy, capable of economically and ecologically creating jobs and reducing emissions in one of six areas: water, energy, construction, mobility, industry, and agriculture. All labelled solutions join the Foundation’s 1000 Solutions program, which aims to encourage the adoption of more ambitious environmental targets and fast-track the implementation of these solutions on a large scale.
“It is fantastic to be accredited the Solar Impulse Label in recognition of all the work and development gone into our rPET honeycomb core technology,” said Bianka Nagy, Marketing Communications Manager at EconCore.
“The Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label provides us with third-party approval enabling EconCore to stand out and demonstrate our drive and determination to invest in clean technologies, to do our bit to limit climate change and to generate further industrial opportunities.”
In accordance with the Solar Impulse Foundation’s focus on sustainability the use of rPET honeycomb cores provide a sustainable solution as well as a good Life Cycle Assessment and low carbon footprint complying with the global sustainability strategy.
