Eyeing a more sustainable future, German plastics company Renolit SE has contributed to the construction of the new experimental roofing of the VeluxLab, Milan Polytechnic university's active house-cognitive building laboratory.
The construction of the first n-ZEB (nearly zero energy building) on the Italian university campus started in 2011, when roofing and windows company Velux Italia decided to convert the Akita demo-house into an experimental laboratory for Milan Polytechnic.
In the most recent development in summer 2019, a new experimental roof made up of three different finishes was added to the building with the help of Renolit. The roof features a green part, an area equipped with photovoltaic panels and a visible aesthetic part.
For the project, Renolit, which is specialised in high-quality plastic films and sheets, provided Renolit Alkorplan SST, a membrane equipped with solar shield technology, and two profiles: Renolit Alkorsolar and Renolit Alkordesign.
The high-energy-efficiency prototype is a real-world case study to explore sustainable development for buildings of the future, Renolit said in a 12 Dec statement.
Promoted by Politecnico di Milano and sponsored by Velux, the building is “a laboratory of excellence”, where research can be carried out on new technologies and materials for building energy efficiency, as well as natural lighting and ventilation.
The building has been equipped with thermal sensors to monitor and validated the construction model, which makes use of geometry for active response to external climatic changes.
The new lab features thermal insulation systems created from recyclable wooden or synthetic materials and external cladding panels from recycled fiberglass.
In addition, interspaces of the building have been filled with grinded polystyrene waste, reducing the total environmental impact of the structure during the construction phase.
The building has won awards from the CENED Energy Protocol, for an A + class ranking along with an Active House Label, for the high performance achieved.
