Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET)
In October, R-PET clear food-grade pellet and R-PET clear flake prices softened by €10/tonne month-on-month because of low demand and a sharp drop in the cost of clear bottle scrap. R-PET producers were also obliged to reduce the cost of coloured flake by €10/tonne because of low demand, even though coloured bottle scrap prices had increased. R-PET recyclers were sitting on plentiful stocks, which they will aim to reduce by year end.
In November, R-PET price movements varied widely with some quotations dropping by €50/tonne and others being rolled over. On average, however, clear flake and clear food-grade pellet prices fell by €10/tonne, even though clear bottle scrap prices remained unchanged: coloured flake prices fell by €30/tonne, Prices were pressured by low seasonal demand and abundant stocks.
Recycled high-density polyethylene (R-HDPE)
In October, R-HDPE coloured blow moulding material prices once again remained unchanged; black injection moulding pellet prices fell slightly. Demand was weak but stable across most end use sectors. Recyclers continued to curtail plant operating rates and aimed to minimise stock levels for end-of-year balance sheet reasons.
In November, R-HDPE prices eased back slightly with a reduction of €5-10/tonne. Demand continued to run at a low level due to the depressed economic situation and processors limiting their purchases for annual balance sheet reasons.
Recycled low-density polyethylene (R-LDPE)
In October, R-LDPE natural film prices were mostly unchanged from September while translucent film pellets and black extrusion pellet prices softened slightly. Demand remained weak across most end use sectors. Producers maintained plant run rates at a low level to avoid a build-up of excess stock.
R-LDPE prices have softened further this month with losses of €5-10/tonne across the board. Demand continued at a low level, and together with adequate supply, led to growing downward price pressure.
Recycled polypropylene (R-PP)
In October, R-PP black copolymer pellet prices were largely unchanged month-on-month while black homopolymer pellet prices softened slightly. Demand remained low and there was growing competition from the lower cost of off-spec virgin material.
In November, R-PP prices have fallen by €20/tonne as demand continued to falter. Buying activity was adversely impacted by competition from further falls in the cost of standard off-spec material and by processors holding back from purchasing for accounting reasons.
Recycled high-impact polystyrene (R-HIPS)
In October, black R-HIPS pellet prices were down once again by €20/tonne compared to the previous month because of low demand and growing competition from the falling cost of off-spec virgin material.
R-HIPS prices are again down by €20/tonne this month because of ongoing demand weakness and competition from off-spec standard material.
