Consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co. is more than doubling the amount of recycled plastic in its packaging for household cleaning brands in Europe by early 2020.
As part of the plan, P&G brands Fairy, Flash and Viakal will increase the use of recycled plastic to 9,000 tonnes of post-consumer resin and post-industrial resin replacing virgin plastic in the supply chain.
The amount, said P&G in a 24 Oct statement, is equal to the amount of waste generated by 6.5 million Europeans per day.
In total, 300 million bottles across P&G’s European household cleaning brands will be converted annually to either 100% recycled or partially recycled plastic. In addition, all surface cleaning wipes will be made of 100% recycled fibre, the company added.
The move has been described by P&G as “a key milestone” in the company’s P&G’s Ambition 2030 commitment, which targets a 50% reduction in virgin plastic consumption in all packaging by 2030.
“We are proud of this significant milestone across our cleaning products as we know with our immense scale, we can create a positive impact,” said Elvan Onal, P&G VP for home care products in Europe.
In addition to targeting recycled-plastic packaging, Onal said the company was minimising its footprint through our Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of products.
As a result, Onal said P&G had optimised the formulas of its home care cleaning products to work at low temperatures, thus lowering their environmental footprint.
