Leading Italian bioplastics manufacturer Novamont has entered into a five-year agreement with the Serbian government under which Novamont will support Serbia in that country’s aim to develop a circular bio-economy model. Specifically, Novamont will develop
a model for the separate collection of urban and agricultural waste, which will be tested in one or more Serbian cities. The company will also have an advisory role, working with the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment to advance the circular bio-economy in Serbia.
Later, the collaboration may be extended to include industrial investments on the part of Novamont or by companies in the Novamont supply chain .
While Serbia is hoping to accede to the European Union in 2025, the country must first get past a few stumbling blocks. The present agreement is aimed at the harmonization of the country’s environmental protection legislation with European legislation.
Novamont is a longstanding pioneer in this area, said Catia Bastioli, Novamont CEO. The company has successfully demonstrated how entire application sectors may be redesigned from bioplastics and biochemicals. The collaboration with Serbia is ‘a further step towards the multiplication of sustainable models and the creation of interconnected and innovative infrastructures for the treatment of organic carbon and the transformation of waste into new products’, she commented.
