Royal Dutch Shell plc plans to use pyrolysis liquid made from plastic waste to make chemical products.
Shell, based in The Hague, Netherlands, announced Nov. 19 that it signed a supply agreement with Atlanta-based Nexus Fuels LLC for the pyrolysis liquid. Shell agreed to buy 60,000 metric tons over four years.
The agreement follows a year of Nexus supplying Shell's chemical plant in Norco, La. Shell has a goal to use 1 million tonnes of plastic waste a year in its global chemical plants by 2025.
Real-world, in-plant testing and application is key to proving technologies and scaling up production of chemicals from plastic waste," Thomas Casparie, Shell executive vice president for global chemicals, said in a news release. "This new supply agreement with Nexus is built on that solid foundation and is a positive step towards providing our customers with bigger volumes of sustainable, circular chemicals."
