Plastics recycler MBA Polymers UK has announced the opening of a new plastics recycling plant in Wimblington, Cambridgeshire. The launching of new site is in line with the company’s ambitious growth strategy, bringing it a step closer to its ultimate aim: to establish a nationwide plastic recycling network able to meet increased customer demand for lower carbon products. The new facility marks MBA Polymers UK's fourth location in the UK, joining its original Worksop site in Nottinghamshire, a separation line in Dover acquired in 2019, and the Duddeston site in West Midlands, established in 2022.
MBA Polymers is striving to reach a production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of recycled plastics for its customers by 2030. The recycler processes plastic bound for landfill, using technologies and expertise gained over the past decade to deliver sustainable recycled plastics with carbon savings up to 85% (vs virgin equivalent). In the ten years since its founding, MBA Polymers UK has diverted in excess of 250,000 tonnes of plastic waste from landfill.
The present expansion will not only further reduce the need to transport feedstock over long distances, it will also enable MBA Polymers UK to supply a higher volume of recycled polymers to meet its customers’ demand. In addition, it will support the company’s growing product portfolio, as it increases its colour range.
“The establishment of our fourth facility will significantly amplify our recycling capacities by 35%, diverting tonnes of plastics waste from landfill and providing high-quality recycled polymers back into the circular economy,” said Paul Mayhew, general manager at MBA Polymers UK.
MBA Polymers UK supplies a range of durable high-quality plastics, including rPP, rPE, rPS, and ABS to sectors such as electronics, vehicle manufacturing, and logistics management. These materials contribute to carbon savings of between 75% and 86%, making them the first recycled plastics to achieve the Carbon Trust's Low CO2 certification.
The Cambridgeshire plant will be operational from September 2023, creating 23 new staff positions.
