Card solutions provider Toppan FutureCard, a Toppan Company based in UAE, has been awarded the right to use Mastercard’s sustainability badge on its PLA and recycled PVC cards. The cards, part of Toppan FutureCard ’s Oxygen range introduced last year, are the OxyCYCLE PVCr, made of a 100% recycled PVC card body and the OxyPLANT PLA, consisting of a 100% degradable cornstarch-based card body.
As a smart card provider, Toppan FutureCard produces millions of plastic cards each moth. “Launching an eco-friendlier card that only has an impact on carbon footprint was not enough for us – we wanted to come up with a broad portfolio of sustainable cards that significantly reduce the overall environmental impact”, said Jean-Pierre Ting, Managing Director of Toppan FutureCard.
Mastercard launched its sustainability badge earlier this year to help consumers find cards produced in a more sustainable fashion from recyclable, recycled, bio-sourced, chlorine-free, degradable or ocean plastics.
An independent certification programme that the sustainability claims have been investigated and validated by a third party. Cards are certified if they are found to meaningfully decrease energy consumption, material consumption, carbon footprint and waste as measured against by current industry benchmarks.
Annually, the benchmarks will improve as overall sustainability levels improve, continuing to contribute to better environmental management.
