Canadian car parts manufacturer Magna has introduced a new product line made of mono-material polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that can be fully melt recycled at the end of its lifetime.
The EcoSphere product family includes trim materials and padding for car seats and a base foam made with up to 60% recycled PET. Magna’s 100% Melt Recyclable Foam and Trim technology, which it claims is an industry-first, has the potential to divert seating foam pads and trim covers ending up in landfills. It also reportedly ensures the look and feel of the seating materials remain consistent with industry standards, while reducing their environmental impact.
"As a top priority for our stakeholders, we recognise the need for innovative solutions that minimise environmental impact,” said Carrie Young, chief engineer, seating innovation, at Magna. “This unique product family enables our seating materials to be repurposed and reused in the creation of new polyester products, contributing to a circular economy approach. Our technology offers automakers a game-changing opportunity to enhance sustainability without compromising on comfort, quality, or performance.”
The products all feature Magna’s EcoSphere Trim Foundation, which is laminated to the back of trim materials to provide support and a crisp appearance. TWE Group, a provider of nonwoven solutions for the automotive industry, is providing the material to Magna from its rePEaT portfolio, including rPET and biodegradable fibres.
