LyondellBasell and Neste have signed a long-term commercial agreement under which LyondellBasell will source renewably-based feedstock derived from 100% bio-based waste and residue oils and fats from Neste. LyondellBasell will process this Neste Re feedstock through its cracker at its Wesseling, Germany, plant. The output will then be used to manufacture polymers that will be sold under the CirculenRenew brand name.
”We are very pleased that together with Neste we can bring our customers one step closer to the creation of more sustainable end products,” said Richard Roudeix, LyondellBasell Senior Vice President of Olefins and Polyolefins for Europe, Middle East, Africa and India.
The two companies already made history together when, back in 2019, they partnered on the world’s first commercial-scale production of bio-based polypropylene and bio-based polyethylene with verified renewable content, said Mercedes Alonso, Executive Vice President, Renewable Polymers and Chemicals at Neste. “I am very much looking forward to the next industry milestones we can reach together,” she said.
The collaboration will contribute to the development of the European market for more sustainable polymers and chemicals solutions by ensuring continuity of supply at significant industrial-scale volumes.
Having achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its European polymer sites, LyondellBasell launched its Circulen family of products is April 2021. The new products demonstrate the company’s multi-pronged approach to achieving its sustainability goals: the CirculenRenew product line consists of polymers linked to renewable-based feedstocks; polymers made from mechanically recycled materials are marketed under the brand name CirculenRecover and those linked to advanced (molecular) recycling are called CirculenRevive.
