LyondellBasell has earned International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification for the cracker and polyolefin production facilities operating at its Wesseling, Germany site. As a result, the company will now be able to provide certificates for its molecular recycled and renewably-based Circulen polymers. The certificate attests to the use and traceability of recycled and renewably sourced materials on a mass balance basis.
As a global standard for recycled and renewably-sourced materials, ISCC PLUS provides traceability along the supply chain and third-party verification that companies meet specific environmental and social standards. In this way, a chain of custody is created.
This certification is part of the company’s multi-pronged approach to advance the circular economy, which also includes the company’s molecular and mechanical recycling activities.
“In our journey to deliver on our sustainability ambitions, we support our customers in reaching their sustainability goals,”said Willemien Terpstra, Director Polyethylene Europe.
“The ISCC PLUS certification is a proven tool to verify compliance with sustainability and traceability requirements. This third-party certification is a confirmation of the concrete actions we are taking in support of a circular economy.”
In addition to the ISCC PLUS certification, LyondellBasell can also offer Carbon-14 analysis for its Circulen products. These products have a measurable bio-content which can be determined by C14 analysis. The bio-content is measured and stated as a parameter on the Certificate of Analysis (CoA).
LyondellBasell announced in 2020 its goal to produce and market two million metric tons of recycled and renewable-based polymers annually by 2030. “This ISCC PLUS certification for our cracker in Wesseling, Germany, and European polymer sites is another milestone on our path to becoming an industry leader in the production and marketing of recycled and renewable-based polymers,” said Richard Roudeix, LyondellBasell Senior Vice President of Olefins and Polyolefins for Europe, Middle East, Africa and India.
LyondellBasell is also pursuing ISCC PLUS certification for its sites in other regions and expects to achieve this for its North American plants later this year.
