Portuguese rigid packaging group Logoplaste has acquired EcoIbéria and sister company WorldPET, both located in the north of Portugal, the company has announced. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The two recyclers, with current annual capacities of 47,500 and 12,000 tonnes respectively, are specialised in the production of recycled PET derived from post-consumer PET waste.
Ecoibéria’s operations comprise the sorting, grinding, washing and transforming of waste PET into usable raw material for the plastics industry, while WorldPET recently installed a new Erema Vacunite 2 system that produces rPET suitable for food applications.
The current CEO and founder of both businesses, Jorge Lemos, will remain in his role.
“The partnership with Logoplaste aims to ensure that the company I founded in 2005, under the name Ecoibéria, plays an increasingly important role in the evolution of the PET recycling industry globally,” he explained.
This acquisition is a strategic step for Logoplaste and its partners. The company is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging, ensuring that 100% of its packaging is recyclable packaging, and achieving a target of 30% recycled content in its beverage packaging by 2025.
With the two recycling companies now part of the group, Logoplaste is reinforcing its recycling capabilities while gaining knowhow about incorporating recycled content into packaging. Ultimately this will allow the company to better serve its customers in terms of technical expertise and in achieving sustainable goals and targets. The company will put this new knowledge to work in the embedded manufacturing model it has developed with its partners, consisting of dedicated facilities, that are fully integrated within the customer’s premises. This approach offers advantages such as eliminating secondary packaging waste, allowing for just-in-time operations and significantly reducing transport needs.
