Styrenics specialist Ineos Styrolution has launched its Eco family of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) grades with recycled content and has entered into a collaboration with Austrian recycler Bage Plastics for the supply of recyclates.

The new Terluran Eco GP-22 grades with mechanically recycled content are the first products of the new Eco range.

Available in black, the two new grades, Terluran Eco GP-22 MR50 and Terluran Eco GP-22 MR70, contain 50% and 70% of recycled post-consumer waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), respectively, Ineos Styrolution announced 9 Oct.

The new family of products has been launched as part of a pledge by parent company Ineos to incorporate at least 325 kilotones per annum (ktpa) of recycled materials into its products.

With mechanical properties matching those of their virgin counterparts, the new material is intended to be primarily used in household and electronics applications.

According to Ineos Styrolution, several European blue-chip companies have already started to evaluate the new material and plan first applications with which to enter the market.

“These new grades will contribute to reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill. It is the right step towards a circular economy for styrenics and will help our customers reach their own recycling targets,” said Sven Riechers, VP business management, standard products EMEA.

Concurrent with the introduction of the new grades, Ineos Styrolution said it had entered into a collaboration with St Marien-based recycler Bage Plastics to use the company’s post-consumer WEEE recyclates in its ABS forumlations.

According to Ineos Styrolution the two companies, have developed recipes to produce ABS grades using up to 70% recyclates without sacrificing product properties or performance when compared to virgin material.

The recycled grades, the company added, are now available in commercial quantities as a drop-in solution for customers.
