California-based Newlight Technologies has extended its line of the home-compostable foodware it produces from its proprietary Aircarbon material. Already available in natural, green and brown, the straws are now also produced in classic black. They come in a wrapped and unwrapped version. Unlike paper straws, they do not get soggy; unlike plastic straws, they will not pollute the environment. Next to straws, the Aircarbon portfolio includes Aircarbon cutlery. Newlight has entered into partnerships with distributors of the products across the U.S. The black straws are the new brand standard for all Loews Hotels in the U.S.
Aircarbon is a PHB materials developed by Newlight. It was born out of 10 years of research to mimic a process that occurs in the ocean every day, wherein naturally-occurring microorganisms in saltwater turn air and greenhouse gas into a natural material that is carbon-negative and home-compostable. Today, the material is produced at scale at Newlight's production site in Southern California.
The straws have been certified home-compostable by TüV Austria, industrially-compostable by BPI, and carbon-negative by SCS Global Services.
