Guala Closures, a manufacturer of special closures for spirits and wines, has been granted ISCC Plus accreditation, for its Spinetta Marengo plant. The certification covers all closures produced at the Spinetta Marengo site, according to a mass balance approach, as long as they contain a part manufactured with the ISCC Plus certified plastics stated in the audit report.
Issued by testing, inspection and certification services provider Bureau Veritas, the certification
verifies that Guala Closures produce certified sustainable Circular Packaging and Bio-Circular Packaging closures, and offers proof of traceability of the entire supply chain, from raw materials to final products.
ISCC Plus certification operates as proof of compliance with ISCC requirements on sustainable biomass production, traceability of origin and documentation of greenhouse gas saving potential compared to fossil fuels.
Obtaining an ISCC certificate represents a real commitment to supporting a circular economy, helping businesses to act more responsibly. “It is an important signal and a quality standard that we intend to replicate in the other Guala Closures plants around the world,” said Franco Bove, COO of Guala Closures Group.
In its production processes, the company has also actively paid attention to environmental and social aspects in addition to the economic profile.
Guala Closures has been actively promoting sustainable development for over a decade. Its first line of sustainable closures, Blossom Sustainable Closures, were designed in accordance with the Group's eco-design guidelines and became available in 2020.
The company is also working with initiatives such as Oceanworks, on the development of closures made with recycled plastic from coastal ecosystems.
Spinetta Marengo, Guala Closures headquarters, is the first plant within the Group to obtain ISCC Plus certification. The Group has been focusing on this project for some time and this first certification represents an important step in the development strategy implemented by the company.
Guala Closures Group has over 4,850 employees and 30 production facilities on five continents. The Group sells nearly 17 billion closures each year, achieving a turnover of €572 million in 2020.
