Vast amounts of mattress and seating foam are incinerated or sent to landfill each year. The Dutch scale-up now thinks it has the solution: at the Foam Expo Europe 2022 show taking place taking place 8-10 November, in Stuttgart, Germany, the company is launching Moorefoam, a product it claims is the world's first fully circular open cell foam.
Moorefoam is a foamed biopolyester that is fully biodegradable and mechanically recyclable. Martin Tietema, the CEO of Foamplant had previously gained a wide experience in working with PHA.
Moorefoam is also inherently fire retardant and requires none of the additives that are used in regular foam.
According to Tietema, who founded the company in 2017 with two partners, Moorefoam can be reused up to ten times. This possibility paves the way for more sustainable bedding, furniture, automotive and avionics who will thus be able to achieve an up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions while significantly reducing their operations' carbon footprint.
The response from the mattress and furniture producers in Europe, as well as from a number of international car manufacturers and aviation suppliers, has been very positive, said Tietema. The young company was a finalist in the 2021 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Rising Star/Most disruptive technology category and is now pending Series A investment.
"With enough effort, persistence and creativity, every material can be produced in a sustainable way,” he declared.
The new foam is available to order now, with initial deliveries in mid-April 2023.
