Packaging expert Huhtamaki has introduced an aluminium-free, monomaterial blister lidding solution for the global pharmaceutical and healthcare industry.
Dubbed the Push Tab, the new blister lid features a 100% PET structure and is designed to meet the requirements with which pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging must comply. The Push Tab blister lid is a plug-and-play solution, according to Tobias Fackler, Senior Manager of the Healthcare Business Unit at Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging. It runs on existing blister packaging lines without needing modifications or extra investment and no compromise on speed. Its monomaterial design significantly improves recyclability of the packaging.
The new lidding was developed in collaboration with Klöckner Pentaplast and matches perfectly with kpNext R1 recyclable, vinyl-free and halogen-free bottom rigid films. The innovation will help the two companies meet their sustainability targets and achieve market growth at the same time.
In 2021, European packaging sales in the healthcare category had an estimated value of EUR 1.4 billion, of which approximately 50% were in blister packaging.
Push Tab is designed as part of our blueloop platform, enabling us to speed up innovation and improve circularity in high-performance flexible packaging solutions, explained Marco Hilty, President, Flexible Packaging at Huhtamaki.
“We are working hard to turn all our products into mono-material fully recyclable structures. In addition, we are collaborating with partners across the value chain to deliver innovation that helps ensure that ambitious sustainability targets around the globe can be met.”
The blister lidding material features outstanding optical clarity. Its PET-Heat Sealing structure is printable using all standard technologies. The Push Tab blister lid is available with push and peel opening options for easy access to the tablet by the consumer.
