It took 60 fire fighters to take control of a blaze at the Peak Environmental Recycling plant in Derry. Five appliances and four specialist units, including an aerial hose, attended the scene.
Police cordoned off a 200-metre exclusion zone because they believed the site contained diesel and gas cylinders as well as large quantities of plastic and cardboard. Local residents were advised to stay indoors and close their windows.
A spokeswoman from the fire service said: “The incident is on-going and at this stage it is too early to determine the cause of the fire.”
