This year marks the seventeenth edition of the UK’s Awards for Excellence in Recycling, which, for the first time will take place virtually due to the ongoing pandemic.
Organised by letsrecycle.com, the Awards recognise innovation, dedication and success within the waste and recycling industries, local authorities and the wider sector.
Among the award categories is the ‘Plastics Recycling Business of the Year’ category, in which this year three companies have been shortlisted as finalists: MBA Polymers, MGB/Straight, Rock Resource Management. MGB/Straight is a leading manufacturer of environmental containers and wheeled bins and works closely alongside 90% of UK councils. MGB produces some 50,000 containers a week.
Rock Resource Management’s products incorporate recycled resources - such as plastic waste in cement - that would otherwise go to landfill. MBA Polymers is a globally operating plastics recycler with a focus on the recovery of plastics from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and auto-shredder residue from end-of-life automobiles.
According to Paul Mayhew, general manager at MBA Polymers, the nomination is an important one.
“At a time where the effective management of plastic waste is in the spotlight, it is crucial that the correct legislative frameworks are created to stimulate the demand needed to ensure post-consumer plastics can be reintroduced into new products by the means of recycled content. This in turn will drive investment into the UK plastic recycling sector, helping create opportunities for plastic recyclers to develop consistent high quality virgin replacement polymers to meet the growing demand of the market,” he said.
The award for Plastics Recycling Business of the Year, aims to recognise a plastics recycling business, small or large operating in the UK who demonstrate good practices and service in a consistent and thorough way for its customers.
The winners of this year’s awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management will be announced via on online event on the 6th November 2020.
