Plastics Recyclers Europe has welcomed the European Commission's Green Paper on plastic waste, saying that it will pave the way to more sustainable plastics production and consumption across Europe.
Ton Emans, president of Plastics Recyclers Europe, said a combination of a landfill ban, enforceable plastics waste recycling targets and “eco-design” offers the best amalgamated approach.
However, at present the total annual production from European plastics recyclers can only cover two weeks of Europe's annual plastics consumption. “This situation is no longer sustainable. Policy makers, industry and society in general must act in order to change this situation” said Emans.
“The policy options investigated by the Commission are the most appropriate ones to reduce the impact of plastics waste on the environment,” he said, adding that “a landfill ban, specific plastics waste recycling targets and eco-design are great solutions to increase recycling”.
“These policies will increase Europe's resource efficiency, create green jobs and reduce our environmental impact,” Emans explained.
