Ecopha Biotech, a producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), has successfully converted pongamia oil into PHA.
Derived from the seeds of the pongamia tree, native to Australia, India, and Southeast Asia, pongamia oil is a non-edible oil which has so far been primarily explored for biodiesel production. In a world first, Ecopha has used its patented process to produce biodegradable, home-compostable bio-based plastic.
Unlike bio-based plastics made from food crops like corn and soy, pongamia oil offers a feedstock that does not compete with food production. The pongamia tree is highly resilient, thriving in harsh, dry climates with minimal irrigation, fertilisers, or pesticides while also improving soil health. Its seeds contain approximately 30% oil, making it a highly efficient resource for bioplastic production.
Ecopha’s process also qualifies for carbon credits through the cultivation of pongamia trees that absorb carbon dioxide. This additional revenue stream can help reduce the overall cost of PHA production.
“Innovation is at the heart of Ecopha’s mission to develop cutting-edge PHA bioplastics technology,” said Dr. Wilson Ling, CEO of Ecopha. "With this breakthrough, we are strengthening Australia’s position as a global leader in PHA bioplastics. Our use of pongamia oil opens new possibilities for sustainable packaging and industrial applications, delivering both economic and environmental benefits. Additionally, our ability to generate carbon credit claims further reduces production costs, making PHA bioplastics a truly viable and competitive alternative to conventional plastics.”
Ecopha has already started commercialising its innovation, partnering with sustainable design company Terra Sol to introduce a range of certified compostable products, including coffee cups, lids, straws, and cutlery, all manufactured in Australia.
Ecopha is capturing the attention of government agencies, educational institutions, and industry leaders, it said in a statement. The company plans to tap the so-far unexploited potential of pongamia oil to market PHA to industries with significant carbon reduction commitments, including energy, mining, and large-scale manufacturing.
