DSM has announced that it will be offering PA6 with the lowest carbon footprint in the market by the beginning of 2021.
According to the company, it will be able to achieve a significant reduction in carbon emissions from its Akulon PA6 portfolio due to the sustainability efforts of the supplier – Fibrant/Highsun - of the key building block for Akulon.
Fibrant/Highsun has embarked on an ambitious emission reduction program in the Netherlands to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions in its production process.
Through this close collaboration in the value chain, DSM says it will be halving the carbon footprint of its Akulon PA6 portfolio, in turn enabling its customers to reduce the carbon footprint of their own products and contribute to the global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It also dovetails with DSM’s CO2REDUCE programme’s goal of reducing the company’s scope 3 emissions - indirect emissions that occur in the value chain and include both upstream and downstream emissions – by 28% per ton of product produced by 2030.
“We have a long history of delivering tangible proof points of our commitment to sustainability,” said Shruti Singhal, President DSM Engineering Materials. He said that the next would be to further lower the carbon footprint through a mass-balance approach of bio-based feedstock.
Akulon Polyamide 6 is a thermoplastic material with high heat resistance. It is commonly used in a variety of applications including automotive, electrical equipment, electronic devices, and packaging.
