Feedstock management company Cyclyx International, LLC, the consortium-based joint venture created by Agilyx and ExxonMobil to recover and sort waste plastic, has obtained certification through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus process for its post-use plastic management systems.
Collecting, sorting and pre-processing plastic waste has been one of the main challenges of recycling the material, whether chemically or mechanically.
Cyclyx was established in order to better manage these processes, aiming to increase the recyclability of plastic from 10% to 90% by accelerating the growth of the advanced recycling industry
To do so, the company has taken a supply chain approach. It connects companies looking for plastic waste solutions - from whom it sources and pre-processes large volumes of plastic waste to be used as raw material in recycling processes - with customers engaged in recycling initiatives. Launched as a consortium-based entity, a growing number of companies have joined its membership since its founding in December 2020.
The ISCC PLUS certification provides Cyclyx customers assurance that the plastic feedstock acquired for their processes satisfies conditions of being post-use and are traceable and auditable. This allows customers to use mass balance accounting to attribute post-use plastics to the production of their certified circular plastics and other products.
This ISCC Plus certification also allows for Cyclyx to source and qualify feedstocks anywhere in the world.
“We understand the great need to validate the claims of recycled content made by our customers for the products they produce,” said Joe Vaillancourt, chief executive officer of Cyclyx. “This certification is the result of significant hard work by the Cyclyx team and provides validation of our unique process for chemically characterising end-of-life plastics and ability to target different recycling options for post-use plastics.”
Cyclyx is currently sourcing post-use plastic for advanced recycling facilities, including the Agilyx Corporation and AmSty joint-venture Regenyx’s facility in Tigard, Oregon and the ExxonMobil facility located in Baytown, Texas. The post-use plastic sourced for these facilities originates from over 500 sources and is already certified as ISCC PLUS compliant.
