Spanish packaging specialist Coexpan has become the first plastics convertor to join the industry initiative Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) which has been set up to increase the circularity of styrenic polymers.
Founded in 2017 and hosted by PlasticsEurope, SCS targets greater involvement of partners across the styrenics value chain and waste management streams to bring circularity the polymers.
Up until today project partners included styrene monomer and styrenic polymers producers Ineos Styrolution, Repsol, Total, Trinseo and Versalis (Eni).
“SCS is delighted that we are now joined by a major plastics converter such as Coexpan. SCS is working relentlessly with partners across the entire value chain to deliver on the unique circularity potential of styrenics, always with a view to food grade applications,” said Jens Kathmann, secretary general of SCS.
As a specialist in food packaging and form fill and seal applications, Coexpan said it recommended polystyrene to its customers because of its mechanical and functional properties, performance and unique qualities.
Such qualities, explained Coexpand CEO Dinis Mota, potentially make polystyrene “the leading polymer in terms of efficiency and circularity.”
“The SCS initiative is fully aligned with our vision of sustainability, a key factor in how we create long-term value. Therefore, we are continuously developing packaging solutions that are fully circular,” he added.
