Ingevity Corporation has earned the OK biodegradable WATER certification from TÜV Austria Bureau of Inspection and Certification for its Capa thermoplastic grades, the company has announced.
The products had previously, in 2022, been certifed as biodegradable in seawater environments by the same certification body, making them one of a very few number of plastic materials to have obtained either certification, let alone both. Products certified for OK biodegradable WATER are guaranteed by TÜV to biodegrade in natural, freshwater environments. The products must undergo stringent testing and achieve complete biodegradation within eight weeks; a challenge in fresh water environments where much lower temperatures prevail than composting conditions.
Obtaining this certification bolsters Ingevity Capa’s capability to help plastics biodegrade quickly and completely, noted Steve Hulme, senior vice president, and president, Advanced Polymer Technologies. “Adding TÜV’s elite WATER certification to our portfolio distinguishes Ingevity as a provider of superior sustainability solutions for our customers.”
Ingevity’s Capa products have achieved a bevy of certifications, including Biodegradable Plastics Institute (BPI), Japanese Bioplastics Association, Seedling and TÜV Austria OK compost HOME, OK compost INDUSTRIAL and OK biodegradable MARINE.
