Borealis has once again been recognised as Austria’s top innovator in the European Patent Index 2024, the company announced in a statement.
The Austria-based plastic producer filled 121 new priority patent applications in 2024 alone, with an extensive portfolio comprising approximately 12,300 patents.
Its recent patent applications primarily focus on key areas such as energy, production processes, consumer product packaging, and circular economy solutions. Notable technologies include Borlink for high-voltage cable jacketing, the Borstar production process for PE and PP, and Borcycle technology for mechanical and chemical recycling.
“We are proud to consistently be ranked as Austria’s top innovator for 2024,” said Stefan Doboczky, CEO of Borealis. “Our innovations ensure that our customers receive cutting-edge and sustainable products. This recognition is a testament to our continuous efforts to push the boundaries of what’s possible and to develop innovative solutions that address the critical sustainability challenges of our time, such as climate change, environmental pollution, and rising energy costs.”
Borealis also runs an annual scientific innovation award that recognises peer-reviewed publications or theses (publication paper, Bachelor, Master, PhD, Postdoc) that describe an innovative idea within production, design and sustainability of plastic materials.
The award comes as petrochemicals giants OMV and ADNOC have agreed to merge shareholdings in Borealis and Borouge. The new entity, Borouge Group International, will also acquire Nova Chemicals for $13.4 billion, establishing the world’s fourth-largest polyolefins player.
Last week, Borealis announced it has achieved Operation Clean Sweep certification for all polyolefin sites.
