Solvay’s partially bio-based Amodel Bios provides superior performance properties and the lowest global warming potential of all PPA in the market
Solvay has further expanded its portfolio of high-performance polyphthalamide (PPA) compounds , the company has announced. The newest addition is that of Amodel Bios, a partially biobased long-chain family of PPA products targeted at electrical and electronic applications in e-mobility.
The new products tick numerous important sustainability boxes. The Amodel Bios range is not only produced using renewable feedstock content from non-food competing sources, 100% renewable electricity is used during its production, with the result that its global warming potential (GWP) is well below that of any other bio-based PPA available.
The product family has been launched specifically with components in e-motors, power electronics and other high-end electrical systems in mind. It offers the highest glass transition temperature (Tg 135°C) of all bio-based PPAs in the market and a melting point (Tm) of 315°C. Designed for injection moulding, it is highly suitable for non-blistering reflow soldered surface mount devices (SMD) and parts in the cooling circuit of power electronics, including fluid connectors. The limited moisture absorption of the new polymer versus standard PPA translates into a high level of dimensional stability and low risk of stress corrosion, which is particularly important with regard to miniaturised electrical connectors. It offers excellent impact strength, even in halogen-free flame-retarded grades complying with UL94 V0. Easily colourable, with high elongation, it also provides weld-line strength and excellent surface aesthetics.
To further bolster the new material’s sustainability credentials, Solvay also enlisted the support of Verisk Maplecroft’s Commodity Risk Service to identify and manage the commodity-specific risks associated with a multitude of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues for the new PPA family. The consultancy complemented Solvay’s own internal supply chain risk assessment process.
Amodel Bios PPA is globally available, initially in four grades with custom-tailored property profiles for structural, electrification and flame-retardant applications.
