The award ceremony honouring the winners of the German Packaging Awards 2022 was held yesterday at Fachpack, on the opening day of the packaging show that is currently running in Nuremberg, Germany. The 38 winners had been announced in August but were officially recognised at a special industry event at which the six ‘Gold’ winners were also revealed.
One of the winning submissions this year in the Sustainability category was a trigger spray head developed by Berry Global for its customer Werner & Mertz.
According to the jury report, the Berry 3R circular trigger sprayer was honoured for its mono-material approach in the ‘design of a spray head that is made from over 97% polypropylene (PP)’. By contrast, a traditionally designed spray head typically consists of numerous individual and complex parts, each made from different materials.
Moreover, the 3R dispensing trigger pump sprayer also incorporates 29 percent post-consumer recycled plastic, while the entire head is 18 percent lighter on average than the current market standard. Combining sustainability with performance, the spray head features advanced pre-compression technology that provides controlled and accurate spraying. The screw-on design allows for easy removal , enabling the bottle to be refilled and the trigger reused several times.
The Berry 3R circular trigger sprayer is being used by Werner & Mertz across its range of household cleaners.
The German Packaging Awards are organised by the German Packaging Institute (dvi) to celebrate the best solutions in packaging. In addition to the 38 winners, the six winners of the Gold Awards were revealed at the event.
The Gold Awards honour innovations that stand out even among the packaging award winners, said Bettina Horenburg, director of Corporate Communications at Siegwerk Druckfarben and, as a member of the board of the dvi, overall responsible for the German Packaging Award.
Of the six Golds presented this year, two were for products in the Sustainability category. One went to Procter & Gamble Service GmbH for its P&G Eecoclic Box for liquid laundry capsules. It saves significant amounts of plastic and transport capacity and is made from 70 per cent FSC‐certified material. The box offers another added value, a new, ingenious child safety lock that, even though very simple and integrated inconspicuously, still functions completely reliably.
The other went to the France-based Albéa Group for their EcoFusion Top tube with Thin‐Wall & PCR Max. The two‐part tube achieves a weight saving of around 30 per cent by reducing the tube wall thickness to an absolute minimum. Streamlining the closure cap resulted in an 80 percent weight reduction compared to standard closure caps. Made from 42 percent PCR, the PE mono-material tube is fully recyclable.
