The Plastic Waste Partnership (PWP), an initiative established under the Basel Convention, is accepting applications for pilot projects that promote plastic waste management.
The goal of the PWP is to improve and promote the environmentally sound management of plastic waste at the global, regional, and national levels. It aims to prevent and minimise plastic waste generation in order to, amongst other things, reduce and in the long-term eliminate its discharge into the environment, particularly the marine environment.
Selected projects will receive up to $500,000 depending on their scope. Projects covering one nation may receive between $50,000 to $180,000 per project. Projects covering a region may receive between $200,000 and $500,000.
National projects should last approximately 12 to 24 months; regional projects can span between 18 and 24 months.
The deadline for applications is April 30, 2025. Decisions are expected by September 2025.
The pilot projects should benefit developing countries or countries with economies in transition.
Applicants must be parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, which currently encompasses 191 countries.
Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional and Coordinating Centres; not-for-profit entities that have observer status under the Basel Convention; and non-party states that have observer status under the Basel Convention may also apply.
