Aramco Digital, the technology subsidiary of Saudi Arabian oil company Aramco, is partnering with Recykal, an Indian start-up which has developed an app-based marketplace for recycled plastics.
Aramco Digital will leverage Recykal’s AI-backed digital and hardware solutions to advance a circular economy model, in line with Saudi Arabia’s 2030 Sustainability Vision.
Recykal will develop and implement sustainability solutions tailored to meet specific requirements for businesses in the Kingdom. These solutions aim to enhance operational efficiency, reduce landfill waste, and promote the responsible management of resources for a cleaner environment.
“At Aramco Digital, we are committed to harnessing advanced digital solutions to drive sustainability and circularity, “said Raj Rao, Chief Growth Officer at Aramco Digital. “Our partnership with Recykal aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, enabling the adoption of AI-powered waste management technologies that promote efficiency, environmental responsibility, and long-term value creation. By integrating cutting-edge innovations, we aim to redefine sustainability practices across industries and pave the way for a greener future.”
Currently, 94% of waste in Saudi Arabia ends up on landfill. Vision 2030’s sustainability objectives include reversing this trend by 2035, recycling or converting 94% of waste. The focus is on recycling municipal waste (81%), waste-to-energy (19%), and reprocessing construction debris (60%).
Saudi Arabia is gradually introducing policies to limit single-use plastics. Major cities, including Riyadh and Jeddah, have pilot programs for plastic waste collection and separation.
Recykal’s app-based platform enables buyers who require small to large volumes of recycled materials to source it from hundreds of authorised recyclers across India. The Hyderabad company is looking to expand its services by partnering with Aramco Digital.
“By harnessing our AI-powered digital and hardware solutions, we aim to revolutionise waste management practices, ensuring responsible resource utilisation and promoting a circular economy model in Saudi Arabia,” said Vikram Prabakar, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Recykal. “Through the integration of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the Internet of Things, we can enhance resource efficiency, improve waste management, and support the Kingdom's Vision 2030, setting a new benchmark for sustainable practices in the region,” he concluded.
