Alpla has been awarded the gold recognition level on the EcoVadis sustainability audit platform.
The medal is an improvement for the Austrian packaging and recycling specialist, whose score had deteriorated since receiving platinum in 2021.
Achieving gold status puts the company amongst the top 5% of companies for sustainability of more than 120,000 companies from all industries assessed to date.
"This is the clear result of structured and continuous cross-functional collaboration within Alpla, driving the sustainability agenda in terms of policy development, target setting, implementation of relevant actions and reporting,” said Miklos Toth, head of sustainability at Alpla.
EcoVadis, the world's leading corporate social responsibility agency, considers 21 sustainability criteria from the areas of environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.
Alpla did a number of investments in plastics recycling in 2023, a trend that continues this year. In July last year, the packaging company consolidated all its recycling activities under a brand called Alplarecycling. It launched its PET recycling joint venture in Romania, and committed a €8 million investment to add a third extrusion line at its recycling plant in Radomsko, Poland. This year, Alpla announced it would build its first PET recycling plant in South Africa.
