Ask the Expert Circular Economy Series: Milliken
In the first installment of the Ask the Expert Plastics Recycling & the Circular Economy Series, Scott Trenor, of Milliken will highlight where the industry needs to come together collaboratively to address persistent technical gaps.
The many performance and economic benefits of plastics packaging have led it to become the material of choice for brand owners and consumers. But plastics’ end-of-life options have not been well managed, and that is having major implications for society and the environment. Growing amounts of plastic waste are spurring companies and governments alike to increase their focus on circularity. Despite improvements in recent years to plastics recycling, many technical and societal hurdles remain.
In this session, Scott Trenor will highlight where the industry needs to come together collaboratively to address persistent technical gaps –– from packaging design and materials choice, to sortation, recycling and reprocessing. All of these areas are ripe for innovation. He hopes to spark a dialogue that can serve as a starting point for research across all fields of polymer science, with the goal of reducing the impact of plastic packaging waste on the environment. With a holistic mindset, Milliken is working on many fronts to boost the circularity and sustainability of polypropylene packaging. DeltaMax® and Hyperform® HPN™ performance additives are helping to advance recycling of the material, and a partnership with PureCycle Technologies aims to close the loop on, and enable the efficient reuse of PP packaging.
