The Swedish home store chain Ikea has stopped serving or selling single-use plastic straws in any of its UK or Ireland stores, restaurants or bistros, as part of its global commitment to sustainability.
In a symbolic move to mark the decision, Ikea displayed its “last single-used plastic straw” in the Design Museum, London between 1-6 Oct.
“At Ikea, we take our impact on the planet seriously… and to celebrate this milestone in our journey, we're displaying our last single-use plastic straw in the Design Museum, London,” the company said in a press release 1 Oct.
The campaign, led by #IKEALastStraw hashtag, is aimed to inspire Ikea customers “to take small steps towards living more sustainably”.
“Plastic straws have become such an important emblem for change when it comes to single-use plastic, but this campaign is not just about straws,” Hege Sæbjørnsen, country sustainability manager, Ikea UK and Ireland.
The move, he said, was to draw attention to “thousands of everyday changes we can all make to have a big impact on the planet.”
