Cleaning products company Ecover has launched a new limited-edition ‘Ocean Bottle' made from 50% post-consumer plastic waste collected from the ocean waterways and shores of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The manufacturer of ecologically-sound cleaning products announced 12 Sept that the new washing-up liquid bottles will be exclusively distributed in the UK in selected Sainsbury's stores as of 16 Sept.
The new product is part of a series of measures by Ecover to “rethink” the way it uses plastics. Such measures, said the company, include using 100% recycled plastic (PCR) in all bottles by 2020 and trialling biodegradable and plant-based alternatives to plastic.
The company is also working with major retailers to find ways to offer consumers refill options in-store.
Ecover said the new bottle was designed after its research showed that three-quarters of people in the UK were concerned about the amount of plastic in oceans.
The company has called on the industry to take more action to tackle the “over-reliance” on virgin plastics, amid growing public demand to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics.
