Austrian supplier of polyolefin compounds Borealis AG, in close collaboration with German chemicals and consumer goods giant Henkel AG, has launched a new packaging solution produced entirely from post-consumer recycled (PCR) material.
In a 28 June statement, Borealis said the key material used for the bottle was Purpolen PE, a high-quality polyethylene regranulate manufactured by its subsidiary mtm plastics, in Niedergebra, Germany.
Borealis reported that the new packaging solution for Pattex adhesive product has undergone and successfully passed extensive application tests, including a three-month storage test and other tests of mechanical properties.
The product was launched on the European market in 2018.
Value chain partner and German plastic processor KKT Kaller Kunststoff Technik GmbH manufactured the bottles.
German plastic components manufacturer bomo trendline Technik GmbH produced the applicator nozzles.
“We identified Pattex Made-at-Home as a candidate for exploring the use of recyclate instead of virgin plastics,” explained Matthias Schaefer, project manager for global packaging engineering at Henkel Adhesive.
Commenting on the development, Günter Stephan, head of Borealis Circular Economy Solutions, said despite the current momentum in plastics recycling, the industry still needs proofs that using recyclates is a suitable and effective option.
“Thanks to this successful value chain cooperation with our partners Henkel, KKT and bomo, we are giving plastics a second life and are thus one step closer to the goal of a more circular economy of plastics,” he noted.
